Al Franken is funny. I don’t agree with anything the Comedian/Senator says, thinks or stands for, but he has good timing and is clever with a phrase now and then. You know, like a Jewish George Carlin.
In his book Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, Franken savages Sean Hannity for the logical fallacy whereby Hannity suggests that John Walker Lindh–the White American who joined the Taliban and was captured in Afghanistan trying to kill U.S. soldiers–was turned into a mush-brain waiting to be brainwashed by his liberal upbringing.
Franken writes of Hannity’s critical take on Lindh’s California rearing:
“It’s a wonder Marin produced only one American Taliban and not thousands, isn’t it? We’re lucky al Qaeda didn’t establish a training camp right there is Sausolito. Hannity keeps hacking away:
“He grew up feeding his mind on The Autobiography of Malcolm X , not Moses or Peter or Paul…In time, Lindh converted from anything-goes liberal agnosticism to hard core Midlle Eastern radical Islam.”
“Before reading this, I had never considered the direct line between liberal agnosticism and hard-core, radical Islam. But Hannity has a strong case. So many of my liberal, agnostic women friends from college gradually relinquished their freedoms and decided to spend the rest of their lives in chadors, avoiding the gaze of men.”
LOL! That’s funny stuff! How ridiculous that Conservatives would think LIBERALS would somehow do an about face and become America-hating Muslims in head scarves! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
But, you know, John Walker Lindh really isn’t such a different story from the latest lunkheaded convert to Islam to make the news. That would be Mrs. Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, wife of presumed Boston Marathon Bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
Here she is as a normal-looking American teenager:
And here she is at 24 “in a chador, avoiding the gaze of men:”
Now, I could be completely and hopelessly wrong, but as she’s from North Kingstown, Rhode Island, I’m betting Ms. Russell-Tsarnaev was not raised in a Right-wing Conservative household. I mean, they had to be indulgent enough to let her live her bizarre lifestyle and yet stay under their roof with a baby. That doesn’t sound like John Birchers to me.
Dad’s a Yale-educated doctor, mom’s a…wait for it…SOCIAL WORKER. They say the family raised her a Roman Catholic, but anyone who has met a Catholic from that area knows how unprincipled and apostate…er, I mean…”progressive” they are. (SEE ALSO: The Entire Kennedy Family). So, really, she might as well have been raised an “agnostic.”
So, it appears Ms. Russell-Tsarnaev met the kind, sweet and good-natured Tamerlan (named after Timur the Conqueror) and fell in love. She dropped out of college, had a baby for Tamerlan and then started working, but only after sharing an apartment with half the Chechen population of the United States– including Tamerlan’s parents– for a while.
Wow. So it was a very short trip from 20-year-old college student who wanted to be in the Peace Corps to converted Islamic fanatic having children for a terrorist who was heading up a cell in the middle of Boston.
Then again, maybe Al Franken isn’t so goddamn funny after all.
